GINNGER: exploring innovative paths to urban regeneration

View online

Dear Reader,

Welcome to the fifth edition of the GINNGER newsletter!

Across Europe, the transition towards more sustainable and resilient communities is taking shape through local actions, collaboration, and innovation. As GINNGER moves into the second half of the project, many of the ideas developed so far are beginning to become visible on the ground.

In this edition, we look back at the consortium meeting in Orte, discussions at EUSEW 2026 on energy poverty and local energy solutions, and recent events exploring the potential of geothermal energy and sustainable regeneration.

While each activity focuses on a different aspect of the transition, they all share a common goal: building practical and inclusive solutions that respond to local needs while supporting Europe’s broader climate and energy ambitions.

We hope you enjoy reading this latest update on the GINNGER journey.

GINNGER's Highlights

GINNGER’s team visits Orte and discovers the “smart” bike path

What does urban regeneration look like on the ground? In Orte, it starts with a 5.5-kilometre “smart” bike and pedestrian path connecting people, places, and sustainable mobility solutions. On 13-14 May, GINNGER partners gathered in Italy to review project progress and shape the next phase of activities. During the visit, the consortium explored local regeneration initiatives, including energy-efficient renovations of historic and public buildings designed to improve quality of life while preserving local heritage.

Urban Reboot video series: next stop, Orte

The latest episode of the Urban Reboot video series takes viewers to Orte, where heritage preservation, sustainable mobility, and energy efficiency are being combined within a broader urban regeneration strategy. The video showcases the renovation of historical buildings such as Palazzo dell’Orologio, together with new mobility initiatives including a pedestrian and cycling path connecting the railway station, the historical centre, and the riverfront area.

SOCIAL INNOVATION

What makes neighbourhood transformation truly sustainable? Technology alone is not enough. People need to be part of the process. In GINNGER, social innovation means developing collaborative solutions that help communities actively shape the future of their neighbourhoods. It combines behavioural change approaches, participatory co-creation methods, and local knowledge to address social and environmental challenges in inclusive ways. Through collaboration between citizens, public authorities, researchers, and local stakeholders, GINNGER supports regeneration processes that are not only effective, but also scalable, inclusive, and long-lasting.
